Southern Region Volleyball League (SRVL) has identified eight teams to represent the region during the Vale Logistics National Tournament.

SRVL held a qualifying tournament on Saturday with men’s teams battling at The Polytechnic Annexe court whereas ladies’ sides fought for supremacy at Blantyre Youth Centre.

In the ladies section, Blazers, Gemz, DMI and College of Medicine all qualified by virtue of being the only four sides that turned up for the qualifiers on the day.

In the men’s section, Thunders, Cobbe Artillery, College of Medicine and Fapphire made it to the national finals.

Thunders were in Group A of the qualifiers and they beat Fapphire and Cobbe Barracks by three straight sets. They also defeated Balaka Police Eagles 3-1.

Fapphire, also known as Poly Troopers, qualified after beating Cobbe Gunners 3-0 and Balaka Eagles 3-1.

In Group B, Cobbe Artillery qualified after beating DMI by three straight sets and College of Medicine (CoM) 3-1.

CoM beat DMI by three straight sets to qualify.

Blazers Captain, Zione Daudi, said they were determined to impress during the national finals whereas Gems skipper, Mirriam Moses, said they will rectify their shortfalls before the national event.

SRVL General Secretary, Martin Hausi, described the games as successful, saying the teams have the potential to do well.

“We believe our teams have learnt a lesson and they will be able to challenge for honours next weekend. We would like the Vale championship to remain in our region,” Hausi said.

Vale Logistics has committed to funding the tournament and sensitisation campaign to the tune of K6.75 million.

The national tournament will attract 18 teams with the men’s category contributing 10 teams whereas the ladies category will attract eight sides.

The Centre and North will provide three men’s and two women’s teams each while the hosts SRVL will be represented by eight teams.
