Eight men’s teams will battle it out in Basketball Association of Malawi (Basmal) National Club Championship to be played at African Bible College in Lilongwe from February 16 to 17.
Bravehearts, Cougars and Central Knights will represent Central Zone Basketball League, with Magang’a, Crazy Warriors and Bricks coming from the Southern Zone.
The Northern Zone will contribute Nkhulande and Mzuzu Pistons to the championship.
In a statement, Basmal General Secretary, Edgar Ng’ong’ola, advised teams to use players that were registered with their respective teams in the 2017 season.
“Sanity is what makes a sport tick. So, any team that would be found featuring ineligible players would automatically be disqualified from the tournament,” he wrote.
In an interview on Monday, Ng’ong’ola said the tournament would provide a base for Malawi national basketball team’s player-selection.
He also said two top teams from the championship stand a chance of representing Malawi at the Southern African Regional Basketball Championship to be played later this year.
The winner will receive K500,000 grand prize, while runners-up and third-placed teams will pocket K300,000 and K150, 000, respectively.
During the Women’s Championship played at Domasi College of Education in Zomba Sunday last week, Brave Hearts Ladies emerged winners after beating Cobbe Ladies 87-32.
