Minister of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare, Jean Kalilani, has hailed Plan Malawi’s Country Strategy, which will guide its operations for five years.
Kalilani said the plan would promote girls’ rights in the country.
After launching the plan in Lilongwe recently, Kalilani said the plan, which provides an overview of child rights in the country, will improve the welfare of girls in the country.
Among other things, Plan Malawi plans to construct girls’ hostels in the country.
Kalilani said girls, as compared to boys, struggle to get education and initiatives that empower girls are a welcome development.
“There is need to address the problems girls face when they go to school so that they can reach the same education levels as boys. Sometimes the distance girls cover to go to school is very worrisome. This strategy is going to help along these lines,” she said.
“Plan is working in Mzimba, Kasungu and Mulanje.They have been building hostels there so that girls should not walk long distances; other organisations should emulate the gesture,” she said.
Plan Malawi Interim Country Director, Gerald Magashi, said the strategy is aimed to transform 6.2 million girls in Malawi so that they can succeed in life.
“The plan, which will run up to 2021, is basically aimed at transforming 6.2 million girls in Malawi so that they can be recognised and also that they can go to school and make their own decisions,” he said.
