The 2017 TNM Super League first-round realised K250,513, 235 in gate revenue from 120 games, representing a five percent nominal growth.

At the same stage last season, the league realised K239, 139,099 also from 120 games, according to Super League of Malawi’s (Sulom) records.

The 16 teams shared K98, 046,826, which is 39 percent of the gross collections. Sulom and Football Association of Malawi (Fam) pocketed K19, 211,917 each.

For the first time, Be Forward Wanderers toppled Nyasa Big Bullets on the earnings after collecting K26.531 million with the People’s Team pocketing K22.068 million.

At the end of the first round last season, Bullets topped the earnings with K22.181 million.

Capital City rivals, Silver Strikers and Civil Sporting Club, are third and fourth with K11.286 million and K4.516 million, respectively.

Sulom Treasurer, Tiya Banda, was satisfied with the revenue.

“It is quite encouraging to see the revenue growth considering that we have not revised gate charges. The share going to teams has also grown from 38 percent in 2016 to 39 percent this year. This is very encouraging and our aim is to get this to 40 percent,” Banda said.

The last game of the first-round between Silver and Wanderers grossed K18 million, but the clubs cried foul.

Rookies Chitipa United are also bottom of the earnings’ chart with K1.985 million preceded by Moyale Barracks and Dwangwa United with K2.151 million and K2.331 million, respectively.

Reacting to the gate revenue, Nomads Vice-Treasurer, Chulu Mkangama, was happy that his side’s performance on the pitch has also translated to more earnings.

“It shows that Wanderers are performing well on and off the pitch. We are happy with the gate revenue but that does not come on a silver-platter. We have worked hard as a club together with all relevant stakeholders,” Mkangama said.

Silver acting General Secretary, Thabo Nyirenda, said there was a slight improvement in the earnings this season.

“It is an improvement compared to our revenue last season and it shows that as a club, our fan-base is growing,” Nyirenda.

He also said the closure of Silver Stadium partly affected the gate revenue for his club.

Ground levy for the first-round was K48.877 million whereas police, cashiers and stewards received K55.710 million each, dropping by one percent compared to last season when they received K56.512 million each. Sports Council pocketed K9.555 million.
