DIKAMAWOKO Arts will tomorrow night stage their two-act play Taking Madiba at Chameleon in Lilongwe.
The performance at Chameleon follows Dikamawoko’s successful first outing in Lilongwe on Friday at Madsoc Theatre.
Tawonga Nkhonjera, who wrote the production but also stars in the play, said yesterday that they sold out box office tickets during the Madsoc Theatre performance.
“We would have loved to have more people but we are happy that we sold out box office tickets. After premiering the play in Blantyre and holding a couple of performances we are on a Lilongwe tour,” Nkhonjera said.
The actor further said they were happy with the feedback they got from the audience on the production.
“Funds permitting, we would want to take the play to different areas for them to sample it. We are happy that those who watched the production at Madsoc Theatre enjoyed it,” he said.
This was initially a one-act play before another character was created.
It is not easy to star in a two-act play but Nkhonjera and Thyangathyanga have showed potential and coordinated well. Directed by South Africa’s actor Xolisa Ngubelanga, who was instrumental in creating another act in the play, Taking Madiba looks at the life of South Africa’s first black
President Nelson Madiba Mandela. The play looks at his qualities and characteristics when he was alive.
In Taking Madiba, Nkhonjera plays the role of Grim Reaper (Death) while Constance Thyangathyanga is starring as The Creator.
The soul collector, GrimReaper, is going about his business, collecting souls and next on his listis Nelson Mandela.
On account of the nature of the man, Grim Reaper has qualms collecting Mandela’s soul, much to the chagrin of The Creator and she makes her case known in clear terms that no matter what, Grim will be taking Madiba.
