Police in Lilongwe have arrested four people for allegedly being found in possession of ivory.

Lilongwe Police spokesperson, Kingsley Dandaula, said the four were apprehended at Mbowe Filling Station while attempting to sell the tasks.

Dandaula said the first suspect, identified as 30-year-old Malinga Iteno, was selling pieces of the ivory at Mbowe Park.

He said, after being tipped, police followed up and apprehended the suspect, who was using a Nissan March, registration number MZ 3815.

“When the suspect saw police officers, he wanted to flee the scene using the vehicle [with little success]. His vehicle was searched and two ivory pieces, worth about K10 million, were found in a sack bag,” Dandaula said.

Dandaula said the ivory weighs 6.9 kilogrammes.

He added that three other suspects have been arrested after Iteno revealed that the ivory transported from Machinga by one of the suspects.

Dandaula identified the suspects as Misheck Thewere, 30, Jangiya Maluwa, 25, and Shaibu Chipembere Francis, 42.

The four will appear in court soon to answer the charge of dealing in protected species.
