Umoza Children’s Programme, which is being implemented by St John of God, has trained 63 primary and secondary school teachers in child rights protection.
The trained teachers are from Mzuzu City.
Speaking during a one-day workshop held at St John of God Hall in the city, project coordinator, Charles Banda, said the training was organised as one way of solving rights-related challenges in schools.
“Our organisation is very concerned with high number of child abuse cases and, having identified that gaps and trained the teachers, we expect that they will help us defend the rights of children,” Banda said.
One of the participants, Star Secondary School teacher Saulos Kaunda, described the training as an eye-opener.
“I will share the knowledge acquired with fellow teachers,” Kaunda said.
Some of the schools whose representatives attended the meeting include Masasa Primary School, Katoto Primary School, Geisha Primary School, Luwinga Secondary School, Target Secondary School and Star Secondary.
