A Malawian youth band that was launched in April known as Zathu has released a latest single and music video titled ‘Sitigonja’.

The band spokesperson Zilanie Gondwe has described the video as unique, saying it is filmed in a way that fuses traditional Malawian music with modern instruments, arrangements and vocal production.

“The video is a second in a series of narrative music videos released and follows the single ‘Zimatere’.

The music video follows the Zathu Band’s skills as they try to find their way to a special photo shoot,” Gondwe said.

She added:

“They encounter numerous difficulties along their journey but work together to overcome them, challenging assumptions and stereotypes as they go.”

Gondwe further said season one which comprised 12 weeks of radio programmes has had huge following and season two will commence later this year.

“A lot of young people are giving us feedback via messages. There is a lot of interaction on Facebook. This is more than a project for a short time, we are talking about behaviour change and this takes many years,” she said.

Gondwe said Zathu intends to be on the ground for many years.

The band is made up of six members, Annetti the survivor, T-Reel the arrogant, Mphatso the strong one, JP the sensitive one, Xander the good guy and Chikondi the dreamer.

‘Sitigonja’ was released on July 24 and can be downloaded for free on Zathu Malawi page.
