Malawi Under-17 national football team has regrouped in Blantyre ahead of the Cosafa Youth Championship scheduled for Mauritius later this month.

The Junior Flames regrouped on Monday with 35 players undergoing trials at Mpira Village (Football Association of Malawi head office).

Team Manager, Enos Chatama, Tuesday said the trials will run until Friday, with the Flames Coach Ronny van Geneudgen and his deputy Gerard Phiri Senior helping in player-selection.

Chatama said they would not dwell much on players of the squad that won bronze at a similar competition held in Mauritius last year.

“We assigned regional coaches across the country to identify under-17 players. We will assess these players and select 20 by Friday. We will check from last year’s squad if we have players that are not over-aged. We believe that good transition will help our football grow and have quality players,” he said.

Malawi are in group A alongside Botswana and Mauritius. Peter Banda won the golden boot award with four goals at last year’s tournament.
