Luwawa International Mountain Bike Race— the most extreme local race with an elevation of 1200 metres—returns to Viphya Mountains in Mzimba on Saturday, organisers have announced.
As per tradition, local and international cyclists are expected to grace the 50 kilometre race which starts and finishes at Luwawa Forest Lodge.
Up-and-coming cyclists will be spared the challenge of competing against seasoned cyclists in the hilly terrain as there is a 19-kilometre category for novices.
“It heads out on forestry roads for approximately 25 kilometres with breathtaking views towards Lake Malawi and then turns off onto some of the most exciting single track riding in Malawi.
“For the remainder of the race, riders will be riding under a canopy of indigenous forest on single track. With an elevation of 1200 m this is a tough but very enjoyable event,” the organisers said in a statement.
HTD KIA and Iveco sponsor the race which the International Cycling Union certified in 2012. Past winners of the main race include Missi Kathumba.
The race benefits the Luwawa Environmental Trust, a charity that helps local people in the area.
