Resident of Kawale Township in Lilongwe have constructed an office block worth K16 million for Kawale Police Sub-station as one way of improving day-to-day operations of the law enforcers.
The residents, through Community Development Committee (CDC), mobilised resources for the construction of the facility.
Speaking during the handover ceremony over the weekend, Commissioner of Police responsible for Community Policing, Willy Mwaluka, said the gesture would help foster the working relationship between police and the community.
“Despite misunderstandings that have been there in the past, Kawale community has shown that they are true partners of the police. The gesture is worth emulating and we urge all communities across the country to emulate the example set by the people of Kawale,” Mwaluka said.
Kawale Police Sub-station was facing shortage of office space, a development which at times forced the law officers to record statements under trees.
Lilongwe City South West Member of Parliament, Rhino Chiphiko, said Kawale residents have demonstrated the spirit of hard work.
“The Kawale community is one of the role models in the country. I have been motivated and, together, we will implement several projects in the area,” Chiphiko said.
Officer-in-Charge for Kawale Sub-station, Deputy Commissioner Mabvuto M’bobo, also commended the residents, saying the police will give back to the community by working professionally.
The community, led by CDC Chairperson Jonathan Patrick, is also planning to construct a brick perimeter fence at Kawale Health Centre.
