Parliament Wednesday started with a minute of silence and a series of eulogies from leaders of four major parties following the death of Nsanje Lalanje lawmaker Sam Ganda.
Leader of the House, Kondwani Nankhumwa, said Parliament is extremely saddened by the death of one of its hardworking members.
Nankhumwa said it is even more painful if the country looks at the number of legislators who have died since 2014.
“Things are not fine,” Nankhumwa said.
Leader of Opposition, Lazarus Chakwera, hailed Ganda for his contribution to the country’s development.
“We mourn with Honourable Ganda’s family,” Chakwera said.
United Democratic Front Chief Whip, Lilian Patel, said Ganda was a politician who freely interacted with everyone regardless of their political colours.
“We will miss his friendliness,” Patel said.
Mzimba West MP, Harry Mkandawire, also joined the people in mourning Ganda on behalf of the People’s Party.
All Members of Parliament who stood thereafter condoled with Ganda’s family for the loss of their relative.
Ganda, who has died while seeking medical attention, becomes the fourth MP to die since May 2014.
Others are Peter Mangulenje of Zomba Chisi, Billy Kanjira of Mchinji West and Highton Jiya of Lilongwe Msozi North.
