Malawi National Football Team, the Flames, have been drawn in what seems a fair preliminary round group A of the 2017 Cosafa Castle Cup.
The draw for the 20th edition of the cup took place last evening in Johannesburg, South Africa in front of high-profile figures such as Cosafa President, Paul Chiyangwa and South Africa Football Association boss, Danny Jordaan.
Scheduled to run from June 25 to July 9 in South Africa’s North-west Province, the Flames will battle it out against Angola, guests Tanzania and Mauritius.
The overall winner will clinch a quarter-final berth against defending champions, Bafana Bafana, who were seeded based on their performance in the cup alongside Botswana, Swaziland, Namibia, Zambia and Lesotho, www.cosafa.com reported Tuesday.
Zimbabwe, Madagascar and Seychelles and Mozambique are in group B.
Due to their poor performance in the competition, Malawi will begin the race from the preliminary round stage alongside lowest positioned Seychelles, Mauritius, Zimbabwe, Angola, Tanzania, Mozambique and Madagascar.
“The four quarterfinal winners carry on through the cup competition, while the losers enter the Plate tournament that Namibia won,”www.cosafa. com reported.
The 2002 and 2003 finalists, Malawi has never won the cup and exited last year’s competition from the group stage after losing 1-0 to Lesotho in a quarter-final play-off.
