Speaker of Parliament Richard Msowoya has appealed to young people to discuss solutions to the problems they face instead of just talking about them on social media.
Speaking on Wednesday when opening the Youth Parliament, Msowoya said the youth should not spend time lamenting on the social media, but rather brainstorm solutions using platforms such as the Youth Parliament.
“The youths take their issues to Facebook and WhatsApp because we don’t give them an opportunity to air their views. This is one of the areas that Parliament has opened for the youth to discuss these issues openly. You find out that it is not about the leader but sometimes it is the system that we have in place and those are the things that the youths can be lamenting so that Parliament can change,” he said.
Speaker of Youth Parliament Mary Namaya, who is representing Mulanje South, said some of the issues they will discuss are unemployment and child rights.
“We, the youth, meet different problems in our daily lives. I will make sure that issues discussed are presented to the senior parliamentarians. There are a lot of issues regarding labour, rights and education that we want to discuss,” she said.
Namaya is a second year student at Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources while deputy speaker David Milambe, representing Zomba Malosa, is also in year two at the College of Medicine.
Youth members of Parliament representing the country’s 193 constituencies are meeting at Parliament until Friday.
