Former Malawi High Commissioner to Zambia, David Bandawe, has died after a long battle with cancer.

Bandawe died on Saturday morning at Kamuzu Central Hospital.

Spokesperson in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Rejoice Shumba, confirmed the death in an interview on Monday.

Shumba said until his death, Bandawe served in different government portfolios including Deputy Clerk of Parliament and Chief Elections Officer at the Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec).

Bandawe then became Malawi’s High Commissioner to Zambia, where he worked for about six years until October last year.

Bandawe’s brother-in-law, Bob Chilemba, said the body will be laid to rest today at his home in Dowa.

“He did his tertiary education at Chancellor College and obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Administration. He then went to Ohio in the US and studied International Relations,” he said.

Chilemba said Bandawe did not seek further employment after his tour of duty in Zambia.

He is survived by a wife and five children.
