Malawian international Robert Ngámbi—deployed as a false striker—once again showed his quality to help Platinum Stars progress to the Caf Confederations Cup’s group stages.
Stars prevailed 5-4 on post-match penalties over AS Tanda of Cote d’Ivoire after the South Africans had won 2-0 in regulation time, thanks to Benson Shilongo and Ngámbi’s goals at Royal Bafokeng Stadium.
Stars had lost 2-0 away in the first leg of the second round.
South Africa’s Kick-Off magazine reported that Stars had Mbongeni Mzimela to thank for keeping them in the tie in the opening 12 minutes as the goalkeeper produced an excellent save to keep out Kevin Koelly.
The win ensures continued international football for Ngámbi whereas Gabadinho Mhango’s Bidvest Wits exited the competition after losing 1-0 in Egypt to Smouha on Saturday.
Stars’ other Malawian player, Gerald Phiri Junior, did not feature in the match as he was reportedly not registered for the competition.
The draw for the group stages will take place tomorrow in Egypt.
Ng’ambi, Phiri, Mhango, Limbikani Mzava and Chiukepo Msowoya of Golden Arrows are the Flames regulars.
