Parliament has said giving the youth a chance to discuss issues affecting them would help in solving some of the problems they face.
Assistant Clerk of Parliament responsible for protocol and public relations, Leonard Mengezi, has said the Youth Parliament, which starts today, is one of the most important gatherings of the youth where they can discuss issues.
Young people representing the country’s 193 constituencies are meeting at Parliament until Friday. This will be the first meeting of the second Youth Parliament of Malawi after the first one was held in August, 2012.
According to Mengezi, resolutions passed by the Youth Parliament are discussed by relevant committees of Parliament such as Social and Community Affairs Committee for tabling in the House.
“The main objective of the Youth Parliament is to give the youth a platform to voice their concerns on critical issues affecting their lives, with the assurance that the government and concerned organisations would be alerted to the challenges they face and take appropriate measures to address them,” he said.
The Youth Parliament is held the same way Members of Parliament conduct their business, with a government side and the opposition.
The Youth Parliament is an initiative of Parliament of Malawi in collaboration with some government ministries and institutions such as Unicef.
