The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology has received K14 billion for development projects in primary schools.
The donation has come from donors, under the Joint Education Sector Fund. The donors include Norway, Germany, the United Kingdom, the World Bank and Unicef.
The fund aims at contributing to reforms in education.
Speaking during the launch of the fund in Lilongwe on Wednesday, Norwegian Ambassador to Malawi Kikkan Haugen said recent developments like the plunder of public resources have forced development partners to move away from funding the sector through the national budget.
“We have created a system that allows for harmonised planning, management, implementation and monitoring of several funding sources. If implemented successfully, it is hoped that this will bring in additional donor partners to the arrangement,” Haugen said.
He also said they expect documented and evidence-based results in the area of equitable access to education, retention and learning.
Minister of Education, Science and Technology Emmanuel Fabiano said the funds would improve the learning environment through the construction of learning blocks, toilet facilities and provision of learning materials.
Fabiano, however, appealed to parents to take a leading role in sending their children to school.
“It is the responsibility of each family to have few children for our education facilities to tally with the number of learners. Parents should also encourage their children to go to school and refrain from giving them household chores during school hours,” he said.
Germany is expected to commence the support in 2018 while the other partners will do so this year.
