Flames star forward, Gabadinho Mhango, on Tuesday scored when his South African Absa Premier Soccer League (PSL) side, Bidvest Wits, beat Golden Arrows 3-0 to revive his Golden Boot Award dream.

Gabadinho took his league tally to nine goals, three behind Orlando Pirates’ leading scorer, Tendai Ndoro.

Before Tuesday’s game, the former Nyasa Big Bullets FC player had last scored in a game against Bloemfontein Celtic on March 3.

Gabadinho converted a penalty in the 21st minute following a handball by Arrows defender, Trevor Mathiane.

However, the referee incorrectly cautioned Arrows’ Malawian defender, Limbikani Mzava, for the offence.

In the second-half, Gabadinho then provided assists for his colleague, Mogakolodi Ngele, to hit a second-half brace.

Speaking in an interview, Gabadinho said it would not be easy to win the Golden Boot Award.

He admitted that he was under pressure to maintain the form of last season.

“Scoring requires hard work because you meet hard-tackling defenders. It is true that I was quiet in as far as scoring is concerned, but I am sure that if I can play my cards well, I can make it because the current top goal scorer would not be scoring in every game,” he said.

In a post-match interview with SuperSport Television, Wi ts Coach, Gavin Hunt, praised his charges for the win, which took them to the top of the table.

“I thought we were excellent in the first-half. Shape was good, we played well and created three unbelievable chances. Gaba [Mhango] had an unbelievable chance in the first-half but he kept working,” Hunt said.

Wits have returned to the top of the PSL with 44 points from 21 matches, replacing Cape Town City who have 42 points from 22 matches.

Meanwhile, striker Chiukepo Msowoya is yet to score in five PSL matches for Arrows. He came off the bench in the last stages of the game on Tuesday.

Msowoya, who signed a six-month contract a few months ago, is under pressure to impress Arrows management.

However, Mzava, has downplayed Msowoya ’s struggles, saying he will catch up in the remaining games.
