A debate has ensued on the social media on the welfare of renowned versatile actor and musician Baba Twaya Sanudi, who seems to have been dumped since he was brought home from South Africa last year.
The veteran actor, who has, since his return, been visiting Chichiri Museum in Blantyre to study, was recently spotted at civic centre.
Reports were rife last month that Chichiri Museum authorities had engaged the police to have him arrested after his refusal to move out of their premises.
But Chichiri Museum denied this, saying they only asked the police to stop him from coming to their place since he had nothing to do and some visitors were afraid of him.
Twaya, who disappeared from the theatre scene, was traced in South Africa where he was not living a good life in one of the parks.
Several players, led by Bilimakhwe Arts’ Kate Stafford, who directed several productions with Nanzikambe Arts, made it possible for the theatre genius to come home.
And when brought to her attention about the social media debate and people’s call to have him taken for medical attention, Stafford said Twaya is in the care of his family.
“Dr Mufunanji Magalasi and Smith Likongwe are talking to them regularly. There is a bit of a problem but everything is being looked into and it is not [true] that he has been dumped. His family has given him a place and makes sure he is okay,” Stafford said.
Stafford, who is based in United Kingdom, indicated that people are too quick to judge but there is a lot happening on the ground.
“We are also mindful of the fact that we need to protect his privacy. So, people should know that he has not been dumped and at the same time he has a right to move around,” she said.
Stafford said the other team has also tried to keep quiet since they are worried about Twaya’s privacy.
Magalasi also observed that people are quick to speak on issues they do not understand.
He said Twaya was going to the open spaces out of habit as they resemble those in South Africa.
“As for medical attention, he is getting some help, organised by the family and we are supporting them. He is slowly changing and improving, [and is] different from the way he came,” Magalasi said.
