Peter Mulomole’s office in Zomba under attack

Unknown people last Wednesday evening broke into some offices at Zomba Diocese Research and Development where Peter Mulomole—the outspoken spokesperson of the Public Affairs Committee (PAC)—also works.

The robbers went away with K2.5 million in cash, computers and other office equipment.

The incident happened a day before PAC delivered a statement to journalists in Blantyre, where the governance watchdog described the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) led-administration as having failed to govern the county.

In an interview yesterday, Mulomole confirmed that his office was among those that had been broken into and ransacked, but was quick to add that it was too early to link the incident to his activities with PAC.

“I don’t want to go that way but it’s true a group of 10 people came and tied the guard and demanded money and computers. I don’t keep my laptop in the office so it is safe. Let’s not say much now and wait for the police to do their job,” Mulomole said.

He said the police were informed of the robbery and they assured him they would investigate the matter.

On his part, PAC Executive Director, Robert Phiri, explained that Mulomole arrived late for the press briefing on Thursday following the incident in Zomba.

Phiri also recalled that PAC offices in Area 12 in Lilongwe were broken into in 2014 and a number of computers were stolen, adding that the quasi-religious body is not in any way intimidated by the incident in Zomba.

He disclosed that PAC officials had been scheduled to have an audience with President Peter Mutharika on the same Thursday at 2pm at Sanjika Palace, but the meeting was cancelled by the State House.

“We were informed that the meeting has been cancelled and it is instead expected to take place on the 27th April. We started seeking the meeting [with Mutharika] in March and the board has to sit down to determine whether we should still wait,” Phiri said.

In the statement released on Thursday, PAC attacked DPP for lacking the vision to steer the country to prosperity in the three years Mutharika has been in power.
