DPP councillors close District Commissioner’s office

by

DEMOCRATIC Progressive Party (DPP) councillors in Chiradzulu District on Thursday sealed the office of District Commissioner (DC) Memory Kaleso, a move aimed at forcing her out of office.

Kaleso is reported to have been a subject of threats from 10 DPP councillors who are not happy with her reluctance to let them use council resources anyhow.

The Sunday Times understands that the councillors want the DC out of office because she has instilled fiscal discipline and refuses to fund political activities.

While confirming the development in an interview on Friday, Kaleso said she was in Lilongwe when the councillors sealed her office.

“I was just informed about the development [because] I was in Lilongwe attending to other issues,” she said briefly.

Meanwhile, inside sources have confided in us that civil servants at the council are planning to put down tools in a bid to counter the move by DPP councillors who are baying for the DC’s blood.

According to sources, the civil servants are worried that some activities may be negatively affected once Kaleso is sent packing.

But Kaleso said she had not received any reports on any impending civil servants’ strike.

Recently, the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development instituted investigations into the matter.

Local Government and Rural Development Minister, Kondwani Nankhumwa, last week told our sister paper, Malawi News, that he was waiting for a report from the team which was given the mandate to probe the issue.
