Isaac Kaliyati passes trials in South Africa

Be Forward Wanderers’ livewire midfielder, Isaac Kaliyati, seems to have done enough to impress Cape Town City, but the South Africa Absa Premier Soccer League (PSL) table-toppers are yet to decide on signing him.

Facilitator of the trials, Mike Makaab, Thursday confirmed that, after three weeks of trials, the former Azam Tigers attacker had left a big impression at the side that evolved from what was called Mpumalanga Black Aces.

City’s Media and Public Relations Officer, Julian Bailey, on Thursday said the South African team’s management would meet later in the week to decide on Kaliyati.

“There are positive signs but for a definite answer call me later,” Bailey said in a telephone interview.

If City take Kaliyati on board, he will likely join as a free agent as, according to records at Football Association of Malawi (Fam), his two-year contract with Wanderers will expire on April 9 2017.

However, Kaliyati can only start playing for City in June when the South Africa transfer window opens for three months, Fam Transfer Matching System Manager, Casper Jangale, noted.

“If they are interested in signing him, what they can do is to secure his services now and have him train to keep fit while waiting for the June window,” Jangale said on Thursday.

Kaliyati was unavailable for a comment yesterday. Wanderers seem to have prepared for Kaliyati’s exit by signing Yamikani Chester from Azam Tigers.

Kaliyati did not explode to full life at Wanderers as he was restricted to playing in the wings whereas at Tigers, he was terrific as they granted him the licence to roam the field.

“Kaliyati is a type of players who needs more freedom. Just ask him to express himself on the pitch then he will deliver. It is the same thing with Chester. If you ask him to stick to a particular role then he will not deliver,” said a Super League coach.
