Poet Mashallo Samilo, who is Malawi Writers Union Northern Region Chapter General Secretary, has shown that local poetry can stand the test of international standards.
This is because Samilo’s poetry piece, ‘Words from The Sun’, has been published by The Next Generation Speaks— a global spoken and written word collaborative initiative that brings together arts organisations from five countries spanning continents.
Participants include Roots and Routes from The Netherlands, Urban Woorden from Belgium, Brouhaha International from the United Kingdom, Youth Speaks, from the United States of America and Word ‘N’ Sound from South Africa.
The Next Generation Speaks dedicated the month of March to love matters, as depicted under the theme ‘Unwritten Letter To My Love’.
When contacted yesterday, Samilo said the development means Malawians can make it big on the international stage.
“I actually urge Malawian artists to aim for international breakthrough. My story should inspire emerging writers,” Samilo said.
The Next Generation Speaks uses poetry as a medium for the exchange of ideas and the development of global networks that may help empower the youth and ease mobility challenges.
