Four athletes and their coach are expected to leave today for Uganda ahead of the International Association of Athletics Federations (Iaaf) World Cross Country championship scheduled for March 26.
Kefasi Kasiteni, Harry Sichali, Chancy Master and Cecilia Mhango will compete in the Kampala race under the guidance of Coach, Moses Mkondowe.
Athletics Association of Malawi General Secretary, Frank Chitembeya, said they dropped four additional athletes due to inadequate funds after sourcing K900,000 from the government out of the budgeted K2.2 million.
“We can only manage to send the four from what we managed to raise,” Chitembeya said about the athletes who will arrive in Kampala on Wednesday by road.
“Our competitors usually fail to perform because they are not given enough time to get used to the prevailing conditions of a host country. So we want the four to have enough to rest ahead of the competition.”
Chitembeya said it was prudent sending the team by road as air travel would have meant sending fewer runners.
