When Patience Namadingo launched the Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) Children’s Ward Cancer Initiative last week, his intention was to raise K1.2 million in 40 days.
But, within four days of publicising the initiative through his Facebook page, Namadingo has beaten the target.
And his cause received another boost on Wednesday, when integrated mobile network and Information Communication and Technology service provider, TNM, joined the artist’s campaign by donating K2.4 million.
Speaking at TNM headquarters in Blantyre, where Namadingo performed for the company’s employees, Senior Manager (Public Relations), Akossa Mphepo, said the company is impressed with “the innovation and determination that Patience has shown in calling on Malawians to help each other through use of his art”.
Mphepo said the artist needed support, considering that proceeds from his performances would help promote the development of a Cancer Ward at QECH.
“Here is a young man who, instead of calling for handouts or asking donors to step in, has decided to raise funds from fellow Malawians through his singing talent. It is such boldness, innovation and pride in the Malawian ability that characterises TNM and one that we fully encourage. We just had to contribute to this noble cause.
“Patience is applying his talent to a cause that touches us all. TNM is proud to be partnering this selfless and talented artist as a continuation of our efforts on the cancer battle front,” Mphepo said.
On his part, Namadingo said he was overwhelmed with the response to his cause.
He assured Malawians that there would be high levels of accountability in the initiative.
“I am happy that people and organisations have responded positively to the initiative. We will keep Malawians updated through our Facebook page. People will also know about what we will buy through Facebook. The initiative started on Facebook and everything will Wend there,” Namadingo said.
Currently, 8.2 million people die from cancer worldwide every year, out of which 4 million people die prematurely.
