Nam to extend coaches’ contract

Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) is considering offering Coach, Griffin Saenda and his assistant Samuel Kanyenda long-term contracts, the association’s President, Rosy Chinunda, has confirmed.

Chinunda yesterday said the duo deserve contract renewals after impressing during the Fast5 Netball World Series in Austria last year.

Nam hired Saenda and Kanyenda specifically for the Games hence their contracts expired after the tournament.

The Netball Queens do not have a coach just like their male counterparts, the Flames.

Chinunda said although a final decision has not been made, there was a strong possibility that Saenda and Kanyenda would be retained ahead of the Africa Netball Championship slated from June 24 to 27 in Kampala, Uganda.

The games are qualifiers for the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games scheduled for Australia.

“We already have the coaches. What is remaining for us is to offer them new contracts. The Executive Committee will meet soon to decide on the key issues such as hiring the coaches for the team,” Chinunda said.

With two months to go before the championship in Uganda, the Queens have not regrouped for training.

Saenda reserved his comment on whether or not he would accept the offer from Nam.

“I will be able to comment on the issue at an appropriate time, but talk to Nam,” he said.

Saenda inspired the Queens to a surprise top-three finish having beaten teams such as Jamaica and England.

The Queens are ranked sixth in the world and second in Africa.
