Lilongwe poetry party on

Vernacular language poets in the country say all is set for the Katambalale wa Alakatuli fifth anniversary show to be held Sunday at M1 Centre Point in Lilongwe.

One of the organisers, Mollen Nazombe, said in an interview that they have decided to hold the first show in Lilongwe because the Capital City is “the centre that holds everything together”.

“We will hold the first show in Lilongwe because poetry lovers say we always perform in Blantyre and then go to other districts and regions. So, we want to give Lilongwe poetry lovers a chance to celebrate with us,” Nazombe said.

Nazombe, who has been organising Katambalale wa Alakatuli in collaboration with Kenneth Khondiwa since 2012, said the Lilongwe show would be followed by another one in Blantyre, to be held at Mibawa Multi-Purpose Hall on March 26.

Some of the poets who are set to perform include Robert Chiwamba, Michael Benjala, Samuel Joseph, Joseph Madzedze and Raphael Sitima.

Musicians and dancers will also spice up the show, and these include Gyv Dancing Crew and Mibawa Band.

Nazombe has, courtesy of Katambalale wa Alakatuli, introduced a number of things in the country, among them all-night poetry shows.

For example, the Katambalale wa Alakatuli organisers on February 24 organised the first ever all-night-poetry show at Mibawa Multi-Purpose Hall in Blantyre.
