May 5 may be far from now, but organisers of Nyasa Music Awards have decided to unveil artists who are set to perform at this year’s inaugural awards set for Comesa Hall in Blantyre.

Making the announcement on Tuesday, one of the organisers, Chifundo Maganga, said the artists and musicians that have been chosen relay messages that the awards stand for.

The artists and musicians include Tay Grin, Theo Thompson, Piksy, Ethel Kamwendo Banda, Faith Mussa, Edgar & Davis and Joseph Nkasa.

“Our careful selection of the artists is a reflection of what these awards are all about. It is a mixture of music genres and, at the same time, the artists represent both the youth and the older generation,” Maganga said.

Maganga said the door is open for young entrepreneurs who are interested in sponsoring categories.

“We will soon announce the categories but the feedback we have got so far is impressive. We assure Malawians that the awards will take place and we are ready for the big night.

“We are still negotiating with a number of big companies for possible sponsorship and we are going to reveal the companies very soon,” Maganga said.

Nyasa Music Awards is being organised by Mathambo Lowole of Thambo & E Entertainment, James Makunje of 15 Sports Bar and Mango Entertainment and Maganga who owns Options Men’s Store.

The members have been involved in a number of music events including performances by South Africa’s DJ Cleo in

Blantyre and Lilongwe; South Africa’s Zahara at 15 Sports Bar in Blantyre; South Africa’s Cassper Nyovest in Blantyre and numerous performances by local artists and musicians.

The awards aim at appreciating local talent and empowering them to compete favourably on the international market. Among others, Nyasa Music Awards recognises the integration of Africa through music which has economic benefits to African countries.

According to the organisers, part of the proceeds from this year’s awards show will be donated to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital’s Oncology Ward.
