Malawi Olympic Committee (MOC) over the weekend met some sports associations to strategise for the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia.

Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) and Athletics Association of Malawi (AAM) were among the associations that attended the meeting at MOC head office in Lilongwe.

During the meeting, MOC unveiled all major international competitions that the committee was targeting between now and 2020.

MOC Chairperson, Oscar Kanjala, on Sunday said there was need to invest in most sports codes to ensure that they do well in international tournaments.

“The meeting was aimed at creating a roadmap as to how our associations, stakeholders, sponsors and the general public will have to follow in order to assist our athletes to excel in international events,” he said.

The committee recently said it was targeting two athletes for the Games, win at least one medal and achieve a top 50 position.

Malawi struggles to qualify for high profile tournaments.

Nam President, Rosy Chinunda, said the Malawi Queens would start preparations soon for the Games’ qualifiers.

“The games are just two months away from now so we need to start preparing for the event as soon as possible. We have already started working on the budget and very soon we will finalise it,” Chinunda said.

The qualifiers will take place in Kampala, Uganda from June 24 to 27.

The Malawi Queens are ranked sixth in the world and second in Africa.

The team impressed at the 2016 Fast5 World Netball Series in Austria having finished on position three.
