Fashion industry showcases products

The fashion industry on Saturday held a Market and Fashion Show in Blantyre.

One of the organisers, Zikani Nyirenda, said players in the fashion industry decided to take advantage of World Women’s Day, which falls on March 8, to showcase products from Malawi.

“We chose to hold the event today [and not March 8] because it is a weekend. We want to show the world that we can do it in Malawi. The fashion and design industry has potential to transform the country’s economy,” Nyirenda said.

Nyirenda, who is Mzuzu Fashion Week co-founder, said the fashion industry has potential to turn around the country’s economy, but lack of vibrant fabrics’ industry defeats that cause.

“We import materials from East Africa and Zambia and this translates into high shelf prices. We wish policy-makers could support the local industry so that the fashion industry can help in the economic development of the country,” Nyirenda said.

One of the participants, Francis Zikhale, said the show gave them an opportunity to link up with potential customers.

“In our case, we have a pop up stand and we are giving people our business cards so that we may link up and do business later,” Zikhale said.

Some of the activities included pop up shops, fashion shows and raffle draw.
