Minister of Health Peter Kumpalume has assured Blantyre residents that the government will this year start constructing the long-awaited Blantyre District Hospital that will ease the pressure on Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre.

Kumpalume was speaking Sunday in Ndirande Township, Blantyre at a political rally organised by the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) to update party supporters on the development initiatives the government is undertaking in the country.

He was responding to questions by chiefs and other people who spoke at the rally calling on the government to fast-track the construction of the hospital to improve health service delivery.

In his response, Kumpalume, who was only asked to respond on the matter, said: “During the groundbreaking ceremony of the cancer centre in Lilongwe, President Peter Mutharika instructed me that the construction of the hospital should start in August this year; this month the President will be holding a groundbreaking ceremony for that project, so be assured that the hospital is in our plans.”

Kumpalume’s remark was also concurred by Minister of Youth, Sports and Manpower Development, Henry Mussa, who said the facility will be constructed at Kameza where the Libyan Government wanted to construct the hospital for the country.

Mussa also warned Malawians against selling their maize while still in the fields.

“There are foreigners who are coming to buy the maize fields from farmers, as government, we are taking all the necessary steps to get rid of these people but more importantly we should not sell our maize to these foreigners,” he said.
