Malawi will host the second edition of International Hockey Federation’s President’s Cup in 2019.
Hockey Association of Malawi (Ham) Vice President, Krishna Achuthan, disclosed this on Saturday when the association hosted Malawi Hockey National Team at recreation centre Al Pacino in Blantyre.
“You have set the standards and when you go back to your respective clubs, maintain those standards. There are a lot of questions on whether we will wait for another 20 years [before participating in the tournament again]. We are hosting the cup in 2019.
“Now, we have to look at developmental teams and women’s hockey. They need to participate in international tournaments and gain exposure.” he said.
Ham hosted the team after, on its first appearance in the cup held in Arusha, Tanzania recently, won silver medal.
Malawi lost 1-0 to Zambia to miss out on qualification to the hockey version of Africa Cup of Nations finals scheduled for South Africa in August.
The Geoffrey Biya-coached Malawi team had a bright start to the cup after thrashing hosts Tanzania 3-1 in the opening match but the wheels came off following back-to-back losses to Zambia.
