60 women rescued from human trafficking

The Malawi government has managed to rescue 60 women who were trafficked to Kuwait and were exposed to various kinds of abuse.

In April last year, Malawi News exposed a human trafficking ring which was sending women to Kuwait on the pretext that they would be paid a lot of money for petty jobs.

But most of them got trapped in ‘slavery’ kind of jobs and they could not escape because their employers confiscated their passports.

After the expose, The Malawi Government has been facilitating the repatriation of the women and girls.

“I wish to report that the last bunch of Malawian women that were trafficked to Kuwait was dispatched from Kuwait on 3rd March and arrived in Malawi on 4th March, 2017,” said Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation spokesperson, Rejoice Shumba.

She said, so far, the government has managed to bring back home about 60 women from Kuwait.

But Shumba could not be drawn to comment on how much the government has spent on the repatriation exercise.
