Football Association of Malawi (Fam) Facility and Transfer Matching System Manager, Casper Jangale, has taken Mzuzu City Council (MCC) to task over the sorry state of Mzuzu Stadium.
Speaking after inspecting the stadium Tuesday, Jangale said the facility was unfit to host a football match.
“The playing field is full of overgrown grass. We will write them [the council] to explain as to why the facility is in such a bad shape. We expected maintenance work to have started by now,” he said.
Jangale who also visited Karonga stadium, also added that Karonga Stadium is far from being ready to host games for Chitipa United..
MCC Public Relations Officer, Karen Msiska, described Fam’s demands as baseless.
“Let them write and we will respond accordingly. We have been planting some lawn recently, but with the ongoing rains, the grass has also sprung, so it is just a matter of slashing it,” he said.
Earlier, Msiska told The Daily Times that the council needed K10 million to complete the renovation of the facility which is home to Moyale Barracks FC and Mzuni FC.
Mzuni Chairperson, Albert Harawa, said he would wait for Fam’s report on the facility.
“But if that is the case then we will have to use either Dwangwa Stadium or Rumphi Stadium,” Harawa said.
Moyale General Secretary, Precious Gausi, said they would liaise with the council on the stadium.
Mzuzu-based soccer analyst Elias Gomile has since described the issue of the stadium as unsurprising.
“It is the same old story season-in-season-out. At the end of every season, the facility is neglected and this should act as a wake-up call. Every off-season period has to be taken as an opportunity to put the house in order to avoid such embarrassments,” he said.
