After a promising start at President’s Cup underway in Tanzania, Malawi Hockey National Team must defeat Zambia today.
A win would enhance Malawi’s chances of qualifying for the hockey edition of Africa Cup of Nations finals to take place in South Africa in August.
Returning to the qualifying cup for the first time in over a decade, Malawi made a dream start after defeating hosts Tanzania 3-1 at Twigas Hockey Stadium in Arusha on Wednesday.
Despite travelling by road for three days, Malawi scored first through James Bandawe before Daniel Matavata and Dino Mgeni sealed the win.
Speaking from Arusha after the match, Malawi Coach, Geoffrey Biya, hailed his charges for the win.
“It was not easy playing under hot weather. I must admit that after Tanzania equalised, I started panicking. However, I told them to play their game and they managed to contain them. We made some substitutions and it really worked,” he said.
However, Biya admitted that the battle was not over. Malawi must find a way past Zambia in today’s decider.
“It will be tough but we are prepared for them. We want to qualify for the final stage. I am sure we will make it against Zambia,” he said.
