The Employers Consultative Association of Malawi (Ecam) has roped in the services of media practitioners in spreading the just launched Adopt-a-School project (AASP).
The initiative—which intends to generate investments outside the funding mainstream and national budget by providing assistance on a short term or long term basis—is aimed at dealing with child labour jointly with the International Labour Organisation (ILO).
During a media awareness workshop held in Blantyre on Friday, Ecam Programmes Officer, Emmanuel Magomero noted that joint efforts with the media are aimed at dealing with the vice.
“We invited the media to share the project concept because there are a number of things involved in child labour matters, especially that Malawi has no Tenancy Bill,” said Magomero.
He further said Ecam with the media are expected to intensify such a campaign to get hold of a school that should be adopted after evaluating the gravity of the challenges.
“Companies that are also willing have the liberty to choose a school of their liking to help deal with child labour,” said Magomero.
He noted that the absence of the Child Labour Policy is affecting the anti-child labour drive.
“Through this programme children in rural areas can have meaningful livelihoods notwithstanding the fact that education is vital in the fight against child labour,” explained Magomero.
Magomero hinted that Adopt-a- School initiative is also applicable to individuals nevertheless not restricted to their catchment area.
Meanwhile, a media taskforce has been instituted to champion such messages. The interim committee comprises George Mhango of Times Group, Grace Khombe of Zodiak, Aston Gondwe of MBC, among others.
