Malawi Law Society calls for continued review of corporate laws

Malawi Law Society (MLS) has called for continued interrogation and review of laws that govern taxes and businesses in Malawi.

MLS president, John Suzi Banda, said this ahead of the body’s conference and Annual General Meeting (AGM) scheduled for February 23 at Sunbird Nkopola in Mangochi District.

He said there is need to continue reviewing the laws until such a time when the laws help local businesses to grow.

The meeting, to be held under the theme ‘Promoting Sustainable Economic Development in Malawi through a Sound Legal and Regulatory Investment Framework’ will, among other things, discuss taxation and commercial laws and regulation of the tobacco sector.

“As a country, we are not doing well in as far as doing business is concerned [and this is] largely due to our laws. So, we really need to review and make them competitive,” Suzi Banda said.

He added that “any serious investor” would first consider the country’s regulatory framework in relation to that of other countries.

He also called on collaborative efforts among Malawians if Malawi is to develop.

“This meeting is in sync with our belief, as Malawi Law Society, that government alone cannot remove this country from its current position so we need all sectors to continue discussing as to what really needs to be done to develop our nation,’ Suzi Banda said.
