Genres can cross paths, in a way only the arts, and not humans, can do.
When humans cross paths, they fight; but when an artist crosses the floor from one genre to another, the arts industries complement each other.
And in a typical case of crossing the artistic floor, up-and-coming actor Alfred Kaambankadzanja, nicknamed Bouncy, has released a music video that does not only break artistic boundaries but also challenges established music genres in Malawi.
It is titled ‘Certified’.
This is the case because he experiments with grime, a genre so popular in countries such as the United Kingdom that its low key status in Malawi remains surprising.
“Actually, I am trying to remind people that, no matter what happens in their lives, we should not run away from the past. Specifically, we should remember the people who have put us where we are, and made us who we are. That is the issue I am tackling in the music video,” Kaambankadzanja said.
The truck is a fusion of dance hall, grime and rap.
Kaambankadzanja, born May 24 1996, is a student at Chancellor College, a constituent college of the University of Malawi.
He has acted in adapted plays such as ‘The Marriage Proposal’, a local re-adaptation of a play by Russian Anton Chekhov.
“I love to act a lot. I do music too. I do a combination of genres. I like to sit alone sometimes and just think and day dream. I watch movies a lot when I have the time,” Kaambankadzanja said.
