Gerald Phiri empathises with referees

Azam Tigers’ Coach Gerald Phiri Senior showed rare strength of character after his team’s 1-3 loss to Kamuzu Barracks (KB) in a TNM Super League match at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe on Saturday.

Despite grappling with the pangs of defeat and the dismissal of Technical Director (TD), Robin Alufandika after heated exchanges with a fourth match official, Phiri empathised with referee, Duncan Lengani, over his questionable officiation.

“What else can we do? It is part of the game. We should understand that sometimes people make mistakes. I do not comment about referees. They are human beings. They are bound to make mistakes,” Phiri told Radio 2 FM in a post-match interview.

“My TD saw it the other way and he was not happy. We understand the referees, but they should also understand us. When we are complaining, they should not just rush into dismissing us. They should hear us out. May be what we saw is different from what the referee saw.”

The following day, Tigers got rewarded as they stunned hosts, Blue Eagles 1-0 through Bright Munthali’s goal to move to 10th position with 35 points from 26 games on the 16-member log table.
