Unfashionable Kamuzu Barracks (KB) marched to the TNM Super League summit temporarily after, for the second time in four days, humiliating Silver Strikers 4-2 at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe Wednesday.
Striker Kelvin Hang’anda, who was in action when KB dragged Silver out of the Fisd Challenge Cup semifinals with a 1-0 defeat on Sunday, was reportedly the tormentor-in-chief yesterday, scoring in the sixth and 29th minutes.
So porous at the rear guard were Silver that even KB’s left-back, Mustafa Salimu, joined the rout, adding the third goal in the 43rd minute, three minutes after winger Thuso Paipi had pulled one back for the vanquished hosts.
KB crushed lingering hopes of Silver’s resurrection by scoring the third goal through Manase Chiyesa, who was also on target, Sunday.
KB, the soldiers from the Malawi Defence Force headquarters in Lilongwe, stretched their tally to 46 points from 25 games whereas Silver are on fifth position with 43 points from 24 games.
The Bankers are in danger of finishing the season empty-handed. Little wonder, the usually measured Silver Coach, Lovemore Fazili, reportedly lost his cool against the referee.
In a post-match interview, KB Coach, Billy Phambala, complained of attacks by alleged Silver supporters on his team’s way to the dressing room.
“It is so unfortunate that we have been attacked. I mean, if we can score four goals, it simply means that we have defeated them hands down. We are not temporarily at the top. Our mission now is to be on top for good,” Phambala said yesterday.
KB have displaced Nyasa Big Bullets, who have now dropped to second place on the standings with 45 points from 25 games, at par with third and fourth-placed Blue Eagles and Mafco.
However, either a win or a draw against Be Forward Wanderers at Nankhaka Ground today can see Eagles dethrone KB.
The league’s championship remains very much up for grabs as KB are the fourth team to taste life in the driving seat as Silver, Mafco and Eagles took turns to lead the 16-member table.
