Brian Mwando drops weight

Boxer Brian Mwando has dropped from super middleweight to middleweight to vie for the national belt against challenger, Chikondi Makawa.

The 12-round middleweight contest will be staged at Robins Park in Blantyre tomorrow. Malawi Professional Boxing Control Board has sanctioned the fight.

Following the development, the Zimbabwean is expected to reduce his weight from 75 kilogrammes to between 70 and 72 kilogrammes to make it in the middleweight category.

Mwando, who is the first contender in super middleweight category having had his belt revoked, said he has exercised his right to fight in the lower category.

“In boxing, you either add weight or reduce it. In this case, I have dropped so that I should take on Makawa. I want to win the belt and I am convinced that I will win,” he said.

Makawa said he was relishing his dream of taking on Mwando.

“I know his weaknesses and I will expose them on Saturday,” he said.

In the main supporting fight, Roy Yuda will take on Eddie Phiri from Zimbabwe in an eight-round junior welterweight non-title contest whereas Tanzanian, Ashe Ndengere, will face Anisha Basheer in a six-round non-title contest.

In other non-title fights, George Kandulo will entertain Romeo Chikwakwa while Juma Jack will date Gift Phiri. Jonas Kakwere will lock horns with Mudi Kuminga.

Alufandika Boxing Promotions has promoted the bill.
