Super League of Malawi (Sulom) and its sponsor, TNM, have condemned the growing attacks on referees and the media at match venues.
Sulom vice-General Secretary, Thoko Chazema, was reacting to the violence that erupted after the game between Nyasa Big Bullets and Azam Tigers at Kamuzu Stadium last Sunday.
Chazema said they will act accordingly on the perpetrators after getting enough evidence. Mafco’s game against Moyale Barracks was also marred by violence in Mzuzu a few days ago.
“The league has become more competitive. However, fighting journalists for taking pictures of the scene will not stop Sulom from getting evidence of the misconduct of supporters and officials. We, therefore, assure all football lovers that the law will take its course on all enemies of football development,” Chazema added.
On Sunday, some Bullets fans descended on referee, Andy Kuseli, prompting the Police to throw tear gas to disperse the supporters. Some reporters were also attacked.
Bullets vice-General Secretary, Kelvin Moyo, told the media that he suspected sabotage by some of the club’s ex-officials.
Meanwhile, TNM official, Limbani Nsapato, said violence was against the company’s values.
“The whole idea of introducing ‘Shasha’ [the league’s mascot] was to show that we do not want to associate ourselves with violence. We want people to enjoy the remaining games with their families. Yes, we know the battle for the championship has reached a crucial stage, but let us accept results. We hope relevant stakeholders are working on ending this malpractice,” Nsapato said.
