Peter Mutharika appoints four High Court Judges

President Peter Mutharika has appointed four new judges of the High Court of Malawi.

The judges are Joseph Chigona, Dorothy de Grabrielle, Ruth Chinangwa and George Bakuwa. The appointments are effective Thursday.

Chigona was Registrar of the Supreme Court of Appeal and High Court of Malawi, de Gabrielle chaired the Industrial Relations Court, Chinangwa was Chief Resident Magistrate for Lilongwe while Bakuwa was Company Secretary and Director of Administration for the Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation.

According to a press release from the Office of the President and Cabinet, signed by Chief Secretary to the Government, George Mkondiwa, Mutharika has made the appointments in exercise of his powers conferred upon him by the Constitution of the Republic of Malawi.

The President is empowered by Section 111 sub-Section (2) of the Constitution of the Republic of Malawi.

Judiciary Spokesperson, Mlenga Mvula, said the appointment of the four will bring the number of judges in the country to 25.

He said two judges are based in the Eastern Region, one in the North, five are with the Commercial Court Division while the rest are with the High Court in Blantyre and Lilongwe.

“We also have Deputy Chief Secretary in the Office of the President and Cabinet, Justice Lloyd Muhara,” Mvula said.

Mvula said the Chief Justice will have to announce the date of the swearing-in ceremony for the four appointed judges.
