Up-and-coming female boxer, Euma Matoga, says no pugilist will stand in her way to success in her boxing career.
Speaking after defeating Dunduzile Kamkwamba on a split points’ decision at BAT Ground in Blantyre on Sunday, Matoga said she was aiming higher in boxing.
“This is the beginning of greater things to come from me. I would like to go all the way to the top and be ranked highly. I would like to be granted a place in the country’s boxing folkrole,” Matoga said.
Matoga, who said she joined boxing after realising that only a few females are into this sport, also threw warning jabs at fellow female boxers, saying the need to watch out for her.
She was among the supporting acts for a bout between Tanzania’s Mwinyi Mzengela and Malawi’s Salim ‘Destroyer’ Chazama.
The international fight ended controversially through a technical knockout in favour of Chazama.
For a long time, boxing has been perceived as a men’s sport and only a very few women have thrived in this field with former World Boxing Forum welterweight champion, Agness Mtimaukanena-Mwando, being the most successful.
