As fire continues destroying property in the country, the National Oil Company of Malawi ( Nocma) has assured Malawians that its strategic fuel reserves have enough fire preventive and fighting mechanisms.

Nocma Public Relations Officer, Telephorus Chigwenembe, said this in an interview on Friday.

He said, among other measures, Blantyre and Lilongwe strategic fuel reserves have 4 million litres of water readily available to fight the fire in case the 25 million litres of fuel in the Lilongwe and Blantyre reserves or the 10 million litres in Mzuzu catch fire.

“We have a well-trained fire brigade on the reserves with very good firefighting equipment. There are 4 million litres of water in Lilongwe and Mzuzu which can enable us to fight the fire for up to 6 hours as we are waiting for assistance if the fire continues,” he said.

He also said the reserves have fuel tank coolants and many similar chemicals which cover the fuel to control the spread of fire.
