Police in Zomba have intensified school outreaches and community sensitisation meetings in a programme aimed at fighting against domestic violence and mob justice, among other practices.
Community policing coordinator Clement Mwale has told pupils and communities in traditional authorities Mlumbe, Mwambo, and Chikowi to desist from taking the law into their own hands and mete out justice to crime suspects.
“You are doing a good job in pinning down suspects but our plea is that you should be taking them to police. If it’s far then take them to community policing or traditional leaders but do not punish them by yourself because doing so is against the laws of Malawi,” Mwale said.
He added: “Every person is innocent until proven guilty; as such let the process of justice take place because mob justice is illegal and defeats justice.”
Mwale also advised the community against domestic violence and urged them to report to the police or community leaders for possible remedies when such cases arise.
“Nobody should suffer in silence; whether it is women, children or men. Whenever one is victimised, come and report to the victim support unit available at any police station for corrective measures,” advised Mwale.
In the drive, the police are also sensitising communities against accusing the elderly of witchcraft, victimising people living with albinism and alcohol and drug abuse among pupils and the youth.
