Airtel Money, official sponsor of Malawi National Netball Team, on Wednesday donated K14.4 million towards the Queens’ preparations for the Fast5 Netball World Series scheduled for Australia next month.

Airtel Money Country Director, Francis Matseketsa, presented the donation at the company’s Lilongwe headquarters. The Queens still have a K19 million shortfall to meet their K33 million budget.

“I am pleased to note that the Airtel Money sponsorship has yielded results. The Queens have excelled at every major international tournament, including the Netball World Cup, the Commonwealth Games, and the Netball World Series. I believe that the Queens will shine as their unique style of play makes them best suited to the tournament’s action-packed dynamic format,” he said.

Director of Sports in the Ministry of Labour, Sports and Manpower Development, Jameson Ndalama, said netball fans, including government, expect a lot from the team after a dismal campaign in recent tournaments.

“We need collective responsibility to achieve our goal at the tournament. But as a ministry, we have set targets for the team to break into the top -four in the world,” Ndalama said.

Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) president, Rosy Chinunda, hailed the company for contributing to netball development in the country.

“We are promising that the team will bring good results. And you are not losing anything by investing in netball because we will continue making the nation proud,” Chinunda said.

The ceremony was attended by several high-profile individuals, including the Queens’ assistant coach, Samuel Kanyenda, and players such as Takondwa Lwazi and Jane Chimaliro.
