AHL group has hailed Kazuni Primary School in Mzimba for its relentless efforts in taking care of the woodlots which the group helped to establish during the tree planting season earlier this year.
Out of the 3,330, tree seedlings planted, 2,989 survived representing a 90 percent survival rate.
Following the development, AHL group over the weekend returned to the school to donate pesticides, farming tools and learning materials as a token of appreciation to the school.
Assistant Floors Manager for Mzuzu, Happy Chifungwe, said Kazuni has out-scooped several other schools in the sustainability challenge in their environment conservation initiative which started over five years ago.
“As a group, we thought such effort cannot go unrewarded as we know that taking care of tree seedlings has proved to be a challenge for most schools but pupils and teachers at Kazuni have demonstrated commitment,” Chifungwe said.
Asked on why the group is investing in re-afforestation, Chifungwe said all is in an effort to reverse the problem of climate change which has had adverse effects on tobacco farming.
“For tobacco to be grown, it depends on good weather, climate and many other things which involve trees so that it finally makes to the market which we provide, as such, we are compelled to minimise some of the challenges in the chain of production emanating from environmental degradation,” he explained.
In her remarks, head teacher for the school violet Kachali said the donation will not just encourage them in the cause but the items will also be used as learning materials.
She said: “Our learners have overtime appreciated the need to conserve our forests.
“This is why they have been so instrumental in raising the two woodlots and an orchard which will in turn benefit them and the future generations.”
