Mera states terms for electricity installers

Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority ( Mera) has urged electricity installers to use high quality electricity installation materials to enhance safety.

Mera Board Member and Chairperson for the Installations and Permits Committee, Peterson Zembani, made the call yesterday at a stakeholders’ workshop which aimed to sensitise stakeholders on the new proposals of the criteria for issuance of licences and permits to various classes of electrical installers.

Zembani said use of good quality installation materials is crucial in ensuring safety of the electricity installations and reduces fire accidents.

“The electricity installation persons are the front liners. So we urge them to ensure safety of the installations by using high quality materials. In fact, the standards of the materials installation persons use in their work will be one of the determining factors of the classes of licences they get,” he said.

Zembani said Mera is working with the Malawi Bureau of Standards to ensure that electricity installers use high quality materials.

Acting Chief Executive Officer of Mera, Ishmael Chioko said stakeholders’ participation in drafting new qualifications for various classes of installers was key for the smooth operations of the energy sector.
